FIGURATIVE PAINTERVera Dan

My canvas is my playground where I can make common objects come to life using only color strokes and texture.

My goal is that my paintings can pull in the viewer with their “descriptive richness, as in a theatre play where the actors are kitchen items, vases, little jewelry boxes, and fruits.

My inspiration comes from the techniques and subjects of Spanish masters like Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, who created paintings called BODEGÓNES.

The word BODEGÓNES comes from “bodega” which in Spanish means “pantry, tavern or wine cellar.” The BODEGÓN painting is usually a “still-life“, representing objects as “victuals, game”, fruits, “arranged on a simple stone slab”. The scene is set in a kitchen or tavern.

With the mixture of warm grey colors and the flow of forms and shapes I try to create a magnetic and complex body of artwork, making a mystic dream come to life from a simple reality of every day routine with strong links to the visual stories of my imagination.

Vera Dan was born in 1956 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. She has loved to paint and draw from a young age and her love for art took her to “Romul Ladea” Art School.

After graduating from there she got a degree (BFA) in painting from The University of Art and Design, Cluj-Napoca.

Vera Dan’s favorite artists are Spanish old masters. She is inspired by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Francisco de Zurbaran, Juan Sanchez Cotan.
