SCULPTORRadu Handru

From my childhood, I was fascinated by the expressiveness of the environment which means vitality, change and rebirth

The painted sculpture has existed since ancient times, in Ancient Egypt, in Greece or in Africa. Usually, the form is shaping the surrounding air, and the colour is modelling the light. I work with sculpture and colour at the same time. By applying colour to my sculptures, I have totally changed the style of the artworks I did before, where I would use only material (wood, stone and bronze). By colouring my sculptures, I have discovered new possibilities to represent the volume.

From my childhood, I was fascinated by the expressiveness of the environment which means vitality, change and rebirth. Therefore, some of my projects are inspired by nature (“Forest”, “Geometric Tree”). The other works are sacred fantasy, divine inspiration, angels, celestial spheres, the sublime of the unseen world that I discovered in my dreams (“Blue Angel”, “Sacred Construction”, “Wooden Dome”). Through my sculptures, I aim to improve different spaces and locations surrounding me.

Makis Warlamis, a professor of architecture and design, and the owner of the ‘Kunstmuseum’ in Schrems represented a big influence on my artworks. I spent a lot of time in his studio and I was inspired by the way he was decorating the buildings, thus this can be reflected in the style of painted-sculpture I am creating.

Radu Moraru, a doctor in visual arts and professor at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, helped me to improve my artworks in wood, stone and bronze.
